Safeguarding

We take our safeguarding responsibilities seriously and we are committed to ensuring that our church and buildings are safe places for all.

Everyone involved in church life at St John’s has a role to play in promoting a Safer Church for all.

St John’s follows the safeguarding policy known as Promoting a Safer Church, drawn up by the House of Bishops of the Church of England.  This policy and related documents can be found on the Rochester Diocesan website.  The National Safeguarding Team have also published an interactive guide to safeguarding, which provides a useful overview of safeguarding in the Church of England.  For further details please see their website here.

If you have any worries or concerns about yourself or another person who may be being harmed or is at risk of harm, we will do our best to help you.  If you have any concerns that an individual working or volunteering at St John’s may be acting inappropriately or harming another, then please report this to one of our Safeguarding Officers or another appropriate authority (see details below).

If a child, young person or adult is in immediate need of protection the police should be called (dial 999).

The Diocese of Rochester's Past Cases Review (December 2019)

St John’s and all other Anglican churches in the Diocese of Rochester undertook a comprehensive safeguarding review in December 2019.  This review looked at all the information a church might hold about incidents of church-related abuse by those who have held positions of responsibility in a church – both recent and non-recent.

The review was completed some time ago, but anyone who needs to come forward with information or make any disclosures regarding church related abuse is still encouraged to make direct contact with the Diocese of Rochester’s Safeguarding team on 01634 560000 or visit www.rochester.anglican.org/safeguarding   A dedicated telephone helpline operated independently from the church is available free on 0800 80 20 20.  Your concerns will be taken seriously.

Sometimes it takes an external prompting, like this Past Cases Review, for those things that have been hidden to be opened to the light of day and to the light of Christ.  But with such prompting may begin the path to penitence and forgiveness, the path to healing of long-hidden wounds.  Please pray for all those involved in this review process and especially for all victims and survivors of abuse.
