Our Lent Lecture this year was held at 7.30pm on Sunday 21st February via Zoom. We were joined by well over 60 people representing churches across Bromley as well as from further afield.
Our lecturer was the distinguished historian Dr Robert Lyman, who spoke on the topic God and History: The Story of One Man Who Gave His All. Robert is a writer, historian and former British Army officer. He has published widely on the Second World War in Europe, North Africa and Asia. He was the BBC’s historical adviser for the VJ commemorations in 2015 and 2020 and is a regular contributor to documentary films on aspects of the war.
Robert is currently working on a new narrative account of the war in the Far East, another book about American experiences of living under Nazism and a combined biography of Slim and Montgomery, Britain’s greatest generals of the Second World War. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Robert became a Christian at the age of 11 after hearing a soul-searching sermon in his local church. He is now a committed member of Waltham Saint Lawrence Parish Church in rural Berkshire.
A recording of the entire lecture, including the speaker’s presentation slides and the question-and-answer session which followed his talk, is now available on the St John’s YouTube channel.
