St John’s, this is your song…

The Rev Daniel Whiffin

I wanted to put something into words to say thank you to your all as we say goodbye today. I couldn’t make it another sermon! So instead I wrote some some lyrics. As I know quite a few people are away today and wont hear me deliver them, I thought I would post the lyrics here.

Verse 1:
It’s a little bit funny what goes on inside:
All those unique traditions and a new Curate can’t hide!
But boy what a welcome you get through this door.
Hearts open with caring love; wine and cake galore.

Verse 2:
Andrew the Vicar, what a mentor he’s been
With John Ilson and Peter, such great examples I’ve seen.
But it’s taken a whole church, this wannabe Vicar to hone.
You’ve all taught me so much. Thank you every one!

Chorus:
And you can tell everybody: this is your song.
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done,
I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words:
How wonderful life is while you’re at St John’s.

Verse 3:
You’ve been kind to my girls — so wonderful to see —
From extinguishing candles, to invites for tea.
With constant encouragement, you shared your lives too.
The people of St John’s, we’ll really miss you!

Verse 4:
Now don’t go forgetting, the things that we’ve gained!
We’ve been through a pandemic; but God hasn’t changed.
Being His child is better than fun, health or wealth.
Knowing Jesus is everything — he is life itself!

Chorus:
And you can tell everybody: this is your song.
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done,
I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words:
How wonderful life is while you’re at St John’s.

Goodbye, and thank you for everything!
